Confidence matters
Clothing optional, nudity expected and private are not synonyms
Terwilliger’s Forest Service page calls the hot springs clothing optional. Breitenbush says guests may soak nude or in a swimsuit in soaking areas. Umpqua’s official trail page tells visitors to expect nudity, which is useful preparation but not identical to a universal dress-code promise. McCredie and Summer Lake have long-running visitor reports, yet the reviewed official pages do not provide the same explicit current policy.
Private tubs solve a different need. Crane and Jackson Wellsprings let one booking party use a private room or tub, but that does not make their public pools clothing optional. The guide includes them under a separate filter so users seeking personal privacy do not confuse it with a shared clothing-optional environment.
Explicit means the current operator or land-manager page states the rule. Expect means an official source warns visitors about nudity. Verify means the custom is reported elsewhere but not confirmed in the reviewed primary source.

- 1
Terwilliger (Cougar) Hot Springs
Blue River · McKenzie River corridor
Clothing-optional forest poolsThe Forest Service describes the springs as clothing optional. A 2026 order also prohibits being publicly nude when visible from Forest Road 19, so the optional setting at the pools does not erase rules around the road, parking and approach.
- 2
Breitenbush Hot Springs
Near Detroit · Central Cascades
Reservation-led retreat and hot spring poolsBreitenbush states that clothing is optional in its soaking areas and guests may wear a swimsuit or soak nude. Clothing is expected elsewhere on the retreat, and access normally requires a day-use or overnight reservation.
- 3
Umpqua Hot Springs
North Umpqua National Forest
Wild day-use spring with short steep trailUmpqua’s Forest Service trail page tells visitors to expect nudity at this popular site. Treat that as preparation for a shared wild pool, while still following the current forest order, day-use hours and posted conduct rules.
- 4
McCredie Hot Springs
Near Oakridge · Highway 58 corridor
Undeveloped creekside day useVisitor guides commonly describe McCredie as clothing optional, but the reviewed Forest Service day-use page does not state a clothing policy. Respect other users and verify any posted rule rather than treating custom as formal permission.
- 5
Summer Lake Hot Springs
Summer Lake · South-central Oregon
Rustic resort with indoor and outdoor poolsThird-party visitor information has described clothing-optional nighttime periods, but the current operator pages reviewed here focus on pools and cleaning schedules rather than a clear dress policy. Ask the operator before relying on the custom.
- 6
Crane Hot Springs
Burns · Eastern Oregon
Managed pond, tubs and staysA reserved private tub gives one party privacy, while Crane’s public pond follows its own property rules. Choose this when exclusivity matters more than participating in a shared clothing-optional setting.

Jackson Wellsprings
Ashland · Rogue Valley
Mineral spa with private tubsJackson Wellsprings offers private single and double tub rooms. Privacy applies to that booked room; confirm attire and access rules for the public soaking pool, sauna and other shared facilities separately.
Oregon clothing-optional hot springs comparison

| Place | Best fit | Access | Cost & booking | Facilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terwilliger (Cougar) Hot Springs | Explicit Forest Service clothing-optional designation | Forest road, limited parking and short trail | Managed day-use fee; confirm current method · No general reservation listed; capacity is limited | Day-use pools; camping only in developed campgrounds |

Policies can change and public nudity laws or visibility restrictions may still apply around roads, parking and non-soaking areas. Follow posted rules at the site.
Etiquette starts before anyone undresses
The goal is a predictable shared environment where clothed and unclothed visitors can follow the same site rules.
Read the location boundary
A clothing-optional pool does not make the parking area, road, trail or entire property clothing optional. Terwilliger’s current order makes the visibility boundary especially important.
Do not photograph other visitors
Treat phones and cameras conservatively. Ask clear consent before including any person, and keep devices away when the setting makes consent uncertain.
Share limited pools respectfully
Keep personal space, follow capacity and session rules, avoid sexual behavior, use towels where requested and leave immediately if staff or land managers close the area.

What is not on this list
Clothing-optional beaches
Collins Beach and Rooster Rock may be relevant to nudity searches, but they are not hot springs and are excluded.
Saunas without spring water
Urban wellness venues are excluded unless the listing concerns a verified spring-fed soaking product.
Rumor-only “secret” pools
No place is labeled clothing optional solely because a blog, review or social post says nudity occurs there.
Clothing-Optional Hot Springs in Oregon: questions
Is Terwilliger Hot Springs clothing optional?
Yes. The Forest Service describes Terwilliger as clothing optional. A current order prohibits public nudity visible from Forest Road 19 and restricts alcohol and nighttime use, so follow the site boundary and posted rules.
Should I expect nudity at Umpqua Hot Springs?
Yes. The Forest Service trail page explicitly tells visitors to expect nudity. The area remains a shared day-use public-land site with conduct, parking and sunrise-to-sunset rules.
Is Breitenbush Hot Springs clothing optional?
Yes in the soaking areas, according to the operator. Guests may soak nude or in a swimsuit; clothing is required in other areas of the retreat.
Is McCredie officially clothing optional?
The reviewed Forest Service day-use page does not state a clothing policy. Visitor custom may differ from formal rules, so use posted information and respectful shared-space behavior.
Are private hot spring tubs the same as clothing-optional pools?
No. A private tub is reserved for one booking party. A clothing-optional pool is a shared setting where guests may choose whether to wear swimwear under the operator or land-manager rules.
